چکیده

Hyponatremia complicates 1% of hospital admissions and can be associated with serious central nervous system effects. We report a case of a 38year-old woman with hyponatremia resulting in seizures and coma. Medications are one of many causes of hyponatremia. This case emphasizes the need to consider selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as a potential source of hyponatremia in all age groups.

Severe hyponatremia and the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) associated with fluoxetine: case report.

Hyponatremia is a significant complication of treatment with serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). We describe a case of a 53-year-old woman that was started on fluoxetine 20 mg/day for depression. Nine days later, the patient started with weakness, nausea, progressing to confusion, inappetence and vomit. Three hours later she became unresponsive and had a generalized seizure. She was...

Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor and Fluvoxamine-Induced Severe Hyponatremia in a 49-Year-Old Man

Objectives. To describe a case of fluvoxamine-induced severe hyponatremia, most likely due to abnormal antidiuretic hormone excretion (SIADH), and to discuss the implication for maintenance treatments for these patients. Clinical Observations. Although this syndrome had its incidence most commonly among the elderly, we report a case of severe hyponatremia (serum sodium <114 mmol/L), in a relati...

Severe hyponatremia associated with the combined use of thiazide diuretics and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Thiazide diuretics and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are among the most commonly prescribed medications. Each medication has been associated with the development of severe hyponatremia. The mechanisms involved in the development of hyponatremia differ for each medication. Thiazide diuretics induce hyponatremia by impairment of urinary dilution, renal loss of sodium and potassi...

INVOLVEMENT OF THE SEROTONIN SYSTEM IN SSRI-INDUCED ANTINOCICEPTION

Serotonin specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) may induce antinociception however, the mechanism of this effect is not clear. SSRls increase 5-HT levels in neuronal synapses and facilitate serotonergic activity. In this study, therefore, the activity of para-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA), which reduces 5-HT release, and 5- hydroxy tryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor of 5-HT, were examined on the a...

Fluoxetine Induced Hypotension; a Rare Report

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that exerts its anti-depressive effect by blocking the presynaptic reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT). Although fluoxetine is usually considered safe for most patients, in the present case report, we describe a young patient with mixed anxiety and depression disorder (MADD) treated with fluoxetine 10 mg/day, who develo...
